What's your why?

Why: We believe that students need to be seen and represented in their curriculum to make real-world connections.

How: The way we ensure representation is through the imagery, names, and demographics.

What: We create engaging real-world lessons…want to learn?

Representation is vital, but accepting the change does not come easy. Growing up, there were not a lot of diverse demographics in our curriculum and books, but we are in a world that is always evolving, and inclusivity is in the mix. John Kotter made it known in his video “The Heart of Change” that change begins in the heart, other words change begins internally through feelings, values, belief, and motivations. I believe students become more engaged with their learning and participation when they see themselves in the content through imagery. To ensure representation is in HMH’s content we must ensure that the demographics are accounted for accurately. However, the first step is ensuring that the Learning Experience Designers know and understand the purpose of the change and initiative. They will need to know the needs and wants of teachers and students. Once the LXD’s know the why that information can be conveyed to the image researchers. Knowing the purpose of representation in the curriculum will provide a better sense of direction and understanding to the designers and researchers.
